The Rupture Assumption

Why the moral systems that survived the deep past were neither the gentlest nor the cruellest.

Human groups did not choose their cosmologies from a menu. Groups whose stories left them defenceless were absorbed; groups whose stories licensed unlimited internal predation ate themselves. What reached the historical record had been filtered by both pressures, a fact that explains a great deal about the religions that came after.

Early Judaism, the imperial conveyor belt, and why empires must keep consuming to stay alive.

A small highland people spent a millennium being administered by somebody else: Assyria, Babylon, Persia, the Ptolemies, the Seleucids, Rome. Out of that came a religious literature obsessed with occupation, and out of Rome came the clearest surviving picture of what an empire actually is: an extraction machine that has to keep growing because it consumes what it captures.

Strip away nineteen centuries of imperial theology and what remains is legible: a rural preacher from a client kingdom, announcing a kingdom that was not Caesar’s, executed by the state in the manner Rome kept for rebels and runaway slaves. The politics of the case are not a modern imposition on the sources. They are the sources.

How the diaspora branch won, and how the Jerusalem church led by Jesus’s brother vanished from the record.

The first great fight in Christianity was not about the Trinity. It was about whether gentile converts had to become Jews, and behind that, about who owned the movement. James lost by dying; Jerusalem lost by being razed; Paul won by writing letters to cities Rome had connected. Almost everything Christianity became follows from that outcome.

From persecuted sect to imperial department in three generations.

Constantine did not convert to Christianity so much as conscript it. Within seventy years an executed provincial rebel’s movement was issuing edicts, holding councils convened by emperors, drafting bishops as civil servants, and turning the machinery of persecution on its own dissenters. The theology that resulted bears the fingerprints of the state that adopted it.

Who decided which gospels were scripture, and what the losing side believed.

There was no New Testament for three centuries, only competing collections, competing Christs, and competing communities. The canon was assembled in argument with Marcion, the Valentinians, the Ebionites, the Arians and the Donatists, and it was finally fixed by councils that emperors called and armies enforced. The winners then destroyed the losers’ books, which is why Nag Hammadi was a shock.

An assembled scripture, a stitched-together godhead, and not one line that forbids slavery.

Christianity is a composite: Judaean apocalyptic, Greek metaphysics, Roman administration, and later European law, sutured at visible seams. This chapter takes the seams seriously: the contradictory nativities and resurrection accounts, the fourth-century invention of the Trinity’s vocabulary, the doctrine of hell, and then puts the decisive question: where, in any of it, is slavery prohibited?

The first European text to sort human beings by colour was a commissioned defence of a slave raid.

In 1444 the Portuguese court chronicler Gomes Eanes de Zurara described the division of 235 captives at Lagos, and needed to explain why it was righteous. Race was the explanation. It did not cause the Atlantic slave trade; it was manufactured to run it, blessed by papal bull, hardened into colonial law, and it has structured the global caste system ever since.

What the invaders found, what they did with it, and what their own contemporaries said about them.

Columbus’s own journal records a people who gave freely and carried no iron; his own administration records what he then did to them, and it was judged criminal by Spaniards of his own century. Further north, English settlers landed among societies whose engineered landscapes and food systems kept them fed on a fraction of the labour Europe demanded, and wrote it down as wilderness.

Colonisation’s indispensable institution was not the musket. It was the mission.

From Dum Diversas and the Requerimiento to the mission schools of the Great Lakes, Christianity supplied the legal theory, the moral licence, the personnel, the language policy, and the classroom that colonisation could not have run without. This is not an accusation from outside the faith. It is the paper trail the churches themselves kept.

The only successful slave revolution in history was billed for its own liberty, and paid for 122 years.

Saint-Domingue was France’s richest possession; its enslaved majority destroyed the plantation regime, defeated Napoleon’s expedition, and declared independence in 1804. The world’s response was quarantine, then extortion: 150 million francs demanded at gunpoint in 1825 as compensation to the enslavers. Haiti had to be made an example, and it was.

France invented the nation in arms; the reaction to it invented the nations that would answer.

The decree of 23 August 1793 put an entire population at the disposal of the war effort and changed what a state could ask of a person. Napoleon industrialised it. Prussia, humiliated at Jena, copied it, and to copy it had to manufacture a German people to conscript. Modern nationalism is, in large part, the administrative residue of that arms race.

Mass schooling standardised a language, a story, and a mobilisable population.

Wilhelm von Humboldt’s reforms are remembered for the research university and for an ideal of self-cultivation. What spread across the world was the other half: compulsory, state-certified, nationally uniform instruction that produced literate conscripts, a shared narrative, and the habit of obedience to a timetable. The school and the levée en masse are the same project.

Social Darwinism was not a misreading of empire. It was empire’s self-description.

Racial hierarchy, national competition and the survival of the fittest were taught in the same schools that trained the conscripts. Colonial practice (the camps in Cuba and South Africa, the Herero and Nama genocide, the machine gun at Omdurman) was the laboratory. In 1914 and again in 1939, Europe applied to itself the methods it had perfected on everyone else.

In November 1932 the Nazi party was losing votes and out of money. It was handed power anyway.

The Nazi vote fell by two million in November 1932, the party was effectively bankrupt, and Hitler was in a state his own circle described as suicidal. What followed was not the automatic verdict of an economic crisis but a decision taken by identifiable men (Papen, Hugenberg, Schröder, the industrial and agrarian elite) who preferred him to the Left. The first camp inmates were communists and trade unionists. Almost none of the men who made the decision were punished.

Protection at home, extraction abroad, and the two brothers who ran the counter-revolution.

Every rich country climbed by protecting its own industry and then demanded that everyone else open up. When decolonising states tried to keep their own resources, the response was not argument but Mosaddegh in 1953, Árbenz in 1954, Lumumba in 1961. Anti-communism was the vocabulary; the caste system was the content, and communism’s existence is the main reason overt white supremacy had to be retired.

The Christian right did not mobilise over abortion. It mobilised over segregated schools, then went looking for a banner.

The organisers said so themselves: what galvanised white evangelicals in the 1970s was the IRS moving against tax exemption for segregation academies. Abortion was selected afterwards, because it worked. Behind it sat a nineteenth-century apocalyptic system (Darbyite dispensationalism), which by the 1980s had fused with a fringe temple movement in Israel to produce unconditional Christian Zionism.

America keeps choosing nothing over something it would have to share.

When integration came, towns filled in their public swimming pools rather than share them. That is not a metaphor; it happened, repeatedly, and it is the template. The war on drugs, tuition, the missing healthcare system, the shape of the welfare state: each was argued in race-neutral language, each tracked the colour line, and the crusading foreign policy that began under George W. Bush drew on the same imaginary.

Fossil capital knew. Its eschatology is science fiction, and its messiah sells cars.

Exxon’s own scientists modelled the warming accurately in the late 1970s and the company funded denial anyway. Responsibility for the emissions is as unequal as everything else in this chronicle. The promised escape (Mars) is physically unavailable: the radiation, the perchlorates, the 0.38 g we have no evidence a pregnancy can survive. This is an old genre of promise, and it is doing an old job.

Science when science excludes; common sense when science admits. The criterion moves; the exclusion is the constant.

In 1922 the Supreme Court told Takao Ozawa that white meant Caucasian, a scientific fact. Three months later it told Bhagat Singh Thind, whom the science classified as Caucasian, that white meant what the common man understood. Whiteness is not a description but a membership, written into Virginia statute in 1691, renegotiated for the Irish, the Italians and the Jews, translated into colour-blindness after 1965, and now running a demographic-panic version whose manifestos have a body count.

A conspiracy can be arrested. What the record shows is worse: a structure that runs without one.

Five centuries of coordinated-looking behaviour, and no committee anywhere: the chronicle stops to explain why. Shared formation and convergent interests produce coordination without a coordinator; elite schools consecrate inheritance as merit; hegemony installs the rulers’ worldview as common sense; and self-deception makes the operators sincere, because the best liar believes it. The smoking guns are public documents, real conspiracies leak within years, and the conspiracy theory itself, with its monotonously Jewish villain, is one of the structure’s own defence mechanisms.

A centralized kingdom of cattle, cultivation, and clientage, and the cleanest scholarly view of what "Hutu", "Tutsi", and "Twa" meant before colonial administration hardened them into a racial register.

Europe arrived in Rwanda carrying a theory. The Hamitic hypothesis (that any complex African institution must have been founded by a lighter-skinned outside race) was in the luggage before von Götzen crossed the border in 1894. A tiny German administration and the White Fathers then governed through the court, wrote the theory into their ethnography, and built the schools that would teach it back.

Belgium did what Germany had only sketched: it collapsed the three chieftainships into one, measured noses, and in 1933 printed "Hutu" and "Tutsi" onto identity cards, making a social category into a state-issued race. Twenty-six years later, with the same racial grammar and the active help of the Catholic hierarchy under Monsignor Perraudin, it changed which race it backed. The 1959 pogroms and the exile that followed were the result.

Rwanda in 1994 was around 90 per cent Christian, most of it Catholic, with an archbishop who sat on the ruling party’s central committee. Churches became the largest killing sites in the country. France armed, trained and diplomatically shielded the regime that organised the genocide, and its own state-commissioned inquiry has now said so. The failure of the outside world to intervene was not an oversight; it was a decision, and its logic was racial.

The Rwandan Patriotic Front began as the political self-organisation of a generation born in exile because the world had accepted their statelessness as normal. It lost its commander in the first days of the 1990 war, reorganised in the Virunga mountains under Paul Kagame, fought a French-supplied army to a negotiated settlement, and then, when the genocide began, stopped it by force while the Security Council withdrew.

Where the organisers went, who protected them, and what the génocidaire diaspora does now.

Opération Turquoise escorted a defeated genocidal state into Zaire, where its army and militia rebuilt in UN-fed camps and launched cross-border raids. Priests implicated in massacres were quietly relocated to European parishes. Suspects lived openly in Paris and Brussels for decades. The political project of 1994 did not die; it moved abroad, learned the vocabulary of human rights, and now fights Rwanda in courtrooms and press releases.

What the development record shows, what the criticism consists of, and how to tell the two apart.

A state that was destroyed in 1994 now has near-universal health insurance, one of the world’s highest rates of women in parliament, and life expectancy that has risen by more than thirty years. It is also governed tightly, and there are real, documented criticisms (including in eastern Congo) that this chronicle does not wave away. What it does insist on is a double standard: the same conduct is read differently depending on who is doing it, and an African success story is uniquely intolerable to a hierarchy that requires African failure.

Rwanda is still one of the most Christian countries on earth. This chapter puts the inheritance itself on trial, so that keeping it or leaving it becomes a choice.

The institution that carried the Hamitic theory into Rwanda, blessed the identity cards, switched sides in 1959, and had clergy among the killers of 1994 still baptises the survivors’ children: the country remains over ninety per cent Christian. This chronicle has spent thirty chapters deconstructing the economics and statecraft Europe exported; it owes the same treatment to the theology. Here is the full philosophical case against Christianity (the problem of evil, divine hiddenness, the geography of belief, inherited guilt, hell, the silent record on slavery), stated so that a Rwandan can weigh the faith as an argument rather than swallow it as an inheritance.

The uncomfortable pattern: who gets invaded, who gets negotiated with, and what changed in between.

Iraq disarmed and was invaded. Libya surrendered its programme and its head of state was killed in a ditch. Ukraine gave up the arsenal on its soil for written assurances. North Korea kept its weapons and is negotiated with. This chapter sets out the record honestly (including the case against the conclusion, which is strong) and asks what a small state is supposed to learn from it.

Why this chronicle plans for cascading crises around 2040–2050 (well before the worst physical effects of the climate crisis arrive), and for nobody coming to help.

Thirty years of climate summits have bent no curve that matters, and the honest planning assumption is that none will. But the system will not fail the way the graphs fail. It will fail the way systems in this chronicle have always failed: politically, financially, and at the borders, decades before the physical worst arrives. This chapter states the assumption plainly, gives the evidence for the 2040–2050 window, and names the danger the rest of the chronicle has been preparing the reader to recognise: that core economies under resource stress do not tighten their own belts. They come back for other people’s.

The projections for Rwanda and the Great Lakes region, read without either denial or theatre.

Rwanda did almost nothing to cause the crisis and will be spared almost none of it. The projections for the region are specific: harder rain in shorter bursts on steep, saturated hillsides; longer dry spells between them; malaria climbing the altitude gradient into highlands with no acquired immunity; coffee and tea belts migrating uphill off the map; and, around the region, drought-driven movement of people on a scale the Great Lakes have never absorbed in peacetime. This chapter sets out what the models agree on, what they do not, and which of the threats are actually about water, soil, and neighbours.

Self-sufficiency in food, water, and energy for the most densely settled country on the African mainland.

A country that imports its wheat, its fuel, its fertiliser, and much of its medicine is a country that can be starved by a price, a blockade, or a distant war; no invasion required. This chapter does the unglamorous arithmetic of Rwandan self-sufficiency: what thirteen-going-on-twenty-three million people can grow on terraced hillsides averaging half a hectare a household; what Lake Kivu’s dissolved methane, the rivers, and the sun can generate; what water storage on a thousand hills actually requires; and which dependencies can be closed by 2040 versus which can only be diversified.

Which manufacturing a small country must own outright before the world that sells it things stops answering the phone.

Every empire in this chronicle kept its colonies as suppliers of raw material and captive buyers of finished goods, and the trade architecture of the present does the same job more politely. Rwanda has already tested what happens when it tries to leave that role: when Kigali raised tariffs on the used clothing that was smothering its textile industry, Washington suspended its trade benefits. This chapter maps the manufacturing that matters for survival rather than prestige: medicines, fertiliser, cement, tools, irrigation kit, spare parts, and the ability to repair everything, and what the record of the BioNTech plant, Made in Rwanda, and the East African market says about how far domestication can go by 2040.
