    During the East African campaign of the First World War, Belgian troops from the Congo take Rwanda from Germany; League of Nations mandate confirmed 1922.

    Belgian authorities, frustrated by Musinga's resistance to Catholic conversion and reform, depose him and install his son Mutara III Rudahigwa.

    The Belgian census assigns every Rwandan a single ethnic category on a state-issued identity card, the moment a fluid social distinction is hardened into a legal race.

    Mwami Rudahigwa abolishes ubuhake

    The cattle-clientage contract is formally abolished by royal decree; the redistribution of cattle is partial and contested, but the gesture marks the late-colonial shift in elite politics.

    The Bahutu Manifesto is published

    Nine Hutu intellectuals, several of them seminarians, frame Rwanda's political problem as a racial one between a "Hamitic Tutsi" minority and a "Bantu Hutu" majority, adopting and inverting the colonial taxonomy.

    A wave of attacks on Tutsi households and chiefs spreads across the country; Belgian Resident Logiest backs the Hutu uprising. Tens of thousands of Tutsi flee to neighbouring countries, the first refugee generation.

    Habyarimana takes power in a coup

    Maj. Gen. Juvénal Habyarimana overthrows Kayibanda following violence in the universities; founds the MRND in 1975 as the sole legal party.

    The Rwandan Patriotic Front (largely composed of second-generation Tutsi exiles in Uganda) crosses the border, beginning a civil war that runs until 1994.

    A power-sharing agreement between the government and the RPF; implementation stalls amid the rise of Hutu Power factions hostile to the deal.

    Habyarimana's plane is shot down over Kigali

    The presidential jet is hit by surface-to-air missiles on approach to Kigali airport. Within hours, organised mass killings begin. Responsibility for the attack remains disputed.

    The genocide against the Tutsi

    In roughly one hundred days, an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu are killed by army units, Interahamwe militia, and mobilised civilians. The genocide ends with the RPF capture of Kigali.

    RPF takes Kigali

    The Rwandan Patriotic Army enters Kigali; an estimated two million Hutu, including the defeated army and Interahamwe leadership, flee into Zaïre, setting up the conditions for the Congo wars.

    UN Security Council Resolution 955 establishes the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, which over the next two decades will indict 93 individuals.

    The RPF vice-president, long Rwanda's effective ruler in his capacity as defence minister, is sworn in as president after Bizimungu's resignation.

    Gacaca community courts operate

    Locally elected gacaca courts try genocide cases (eventually nearly two million) at the village level. Praised for scale and reach; criticised for due-process gaps.

    New constitution and first multiparty elections

    A new constitution institutionalises post-genocide governance: bans "divisionism" and ethnic mobilisation, mandates power-sharing, fixes high quotas for women in parliament.
